Painting predominately with red hues is difficult for me. I do not know why. Using red as a highlight color is much easier, that I truly understand. However, I am not afraid of using red hues, they simply are not my forte. As I began to paint this miniature, my palette knife moved the paints like a warm knife in butter. The subtle blending of the blue and purple with red created a rich, deep black. The yellow hues leapt from beneath the red, as if on fire.
The movement of the knife in the paint as I lifted it, reminded me of flames dancing. Reaching. Growing. Searching. As I finished the painting, it felt as if I could feel the flames. This painting was created during the #pcj30in30 Instagram painting challenge in 2017. The painting is signed, titled and dated on the back; hidden when framed.
