As I began this diptych, I had blue, aqua, yellow and purple hues out, knowing these were my color palette yet, I having no clue what they would become. I began these paintings using my fingers and my palette knife to create ridges of texture in the background with a heavy gloss gel. Also, atypical of my usual style, using a brush I enhanced the background of rich blues, deep green and dark purple over the textured layers.
As I worked the paints onto the canvas, I continued to build impasto layers of yellow, white and green. The resulting vivid color of the layers juxtaposed against the dark rich background began to give these paintings a cosmic feel, of floating in space. Wanting to bring this feeling out even more, I splattered aqua across both pieces of the diptych, creating a more galactic feeling to the diptych.
After I finished the diptych, I stood back a distance, wondering at them. I could turn them in any direction and new thoughts came. Islands in a vast sea as seen from a satellite? Celestial clouds of gas and dust? Yes, a nebula-like cosmic feeling resonated whimsically within me.
